Grace Academy Solihull Hits the Right Notes for World Music Day Celebration

Grace Academy Solihull was alive with rhythm and melody last week as students and staff came together to celebrate World Music Day -an international tribute to the universal language of music.

World Music Day—an annual event now marked in over 120 countries—began in France in 1982 when the then-French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, launched it as a day to promote the universal joy of music. Over 40 years later, its mission has been to inspire people to listen, play, and experience music in all its forms. This year the celebration is louder than ever, and Grace Academy made sure to strike a memorable chord.

The school hosted a vibrant array of activities designed to get everyone involved in the musical spirit. From a lively World Music Day quiz to a creative poster competition, students had the chance to explore music from different cultures and express their own musical passions. The real showstoppers, however, were the live performances by talented Year 7 and Year 10 students, who took to the stage to share their musical flair with classmates and staff.

One of the most unique elements of the celebration was the “Musical Time Capsule” activity. Students and staff wrote down their favourite song or artist, sealing their choices in a time capsule set to be opened in 10 years’ time. It’s a musical snapshot of 2024 that future students and alumni will one day rediscover—a reminder of how music continues to shape generations.

Music teacher Ms Hadley shared, “It’s incredible to see how music connects our school community. Events like this not only celebrate talent but also help us appreciate music’s power to bring people together.”
