Department Intent

 

A broad and balanced curriculum which produces well rounded and informed members of society who can achieve outstanding academic success.

A curriculum that meets the needs of all and improves over time, refined and owned by a reflective and professional staff bod

The PHSE curriculum will provide the knowledge and understanding to ensure a future that is healthy and safe. It will encourage participative and actives citizens, prepared for life and work.

 The curriculum will equip students

  • With the understanding of how to keep themselves healthy.
  • With the knowledge needed to develop positive and safe relationships, including sex.
  • The skills needed to make choices based on well informed personal morality, understanding that the decisions they make will affect them and others.
  • To be inspired to have curiosity and explore personal dreams and goals, including future education and career opportunities.
  • With the opportunity to understand their own identity, how they interact with the world and respect for cultural differences seen between individuals.

Year 7

Term 1 Unit(s) Title: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Differences

Topics Include: Identity, influences and peer pressure, protected characteristics, bullying, and puberty

·          Christopher Winter Drugs and Alcohol lessons, delivered in Science. Legal and illegal drugs, cannabis and volatile substance abuse

Term 2 Unit(s) Title: Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me

Topics Include: Identifying personal dreams and goals, managing set-backs, motivation and reward, physical and emotional health, sleep, nutrition, vaccinations.

·         Christopher Winter lessons, delivered in Science. Changes in Puberty, managing feelings, and getting help and support

Term 3 Unit(s) Title: Relationships and Changing me

Topics Include: Components of positive relationships, media portrayal of relationships, rights and responsibilities, family changes, mood changes, puberty and body development, and self-image.

 

Year 8

Term 1 Unit(s) Title: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Differences

Topics Include: Changing identity, faith and beliefs, understanding myself and others, protected characteristics, making a positive contribution to community, social mobility, and making a difference.

·         Christopher Winter Drugs and Alcohol lessons, delivered in Science. Exploring views about drugs, contact with The Law, and binge drinking.

Term 2 Unit(s) Title: Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me

Topics Include: Short, medium and long term goals, different types of business and organisation, budgeting. Stress and triggers, first aid and CPR, why substances are used, role of medicines, dental health.

Term 3 Unit(s) Title:  Relationships and Changing me

Topics Include: Social media, relationship skills, personal space, media influences, managing change, coping with challenge, and taking responsibility for change.

·         Christopher Winter lessons, delivered in Science. Communicating in relationships, conception, and contraception.

 

Year 9

Term 1 Unit(s) Title: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Differences

Topics Include: Young people around the world, peer approval, social groups influences, adolescent brain and behaviour, protected characteristics, diversity across the world, positive and negative language, types of bullying, and recognising prejudice.

Term 2 Unit(s) Title:  Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me

Topics Include: Personal strengths, SMART planning, managing criticism and feedback. Legislation and young people at work. Positive lifestyle choices, sleep hygiene, effects of alcohol and substance abuse, mental health.

•          BHR Values day – Sexting, Relationship Qualities, Self-esteem & Body image, Contraception & STIs

Term 3 Unit(s) Title: Relationships and Changing me

Topics Include: Power and control in relationships, consent and assertiveness, contraception, mental health, adapting to change, self-reflection and evaluation, and sleep.

·         Christopher Winter RSHE lessons, delivered in Science. Sexual exploitation, STI’s and sexual health, contraception and sexual health. Christopher Winter Drugs and Alcohol lessons, delivered in Science. Exploring views about drugs, contact with The Law, and binge drinking.

Year 10

Term 1 Unit(s) Title: Taking responsibility for ourselves.

Topics Include: Careers, e-safety, British values, excellence.

 

Term 2 Unit(s) Title: How can I impact my world?

Topics Include: Mental health and wellbeing, careers, grace in action, parliament and government.

·         BHR Values day – Mental wellbeing, alcohol & drugs. Teen pregnancy, love & lust, relationship values

 

Term 3 Unit(s) Title: What do I value?

Topics Include: Democracy, careers, perspectives, elections and voting

 

Year 11

Term 1 Unit(s) Title: My future

Topics Include: Careers and university

·         BHR Values day – Relationship Abuse, Marriage, Sexual Consent, Pornography

 

Term 2 Unit(s) Title: Taking care of me

Topics Include: Mental health and wellbeing, knife crime, and e-safety
