World Environment Day 2024
On Wednesday 5 June, the Academy was recognised by the United Nations as an official celebrator and contributor towards this year’s World Environment Day, which is a global platform for inspiring positive change. People from more than 150 countries participate in this United Nations international day, which celebrates environmental action and the power of governments, businesses and individuals to create a more sustainable world.
Students engaged in discussions around what they can do at a local level to try and reduce the impact they might have on the environment, which included conversations around:
- Buying local to support local farmers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Collecting kitchen waste to use as compost in gardens or contribute to composting schemes
- Trying to use public transport when possible and walking to school
- Using reusable items more, such as water bottles and shopping bags
Students also had the opportunity to submit environmental pledges and participate in a whole-school quiz on the theme of land restoration, desertification and drought resilience and winners for these environmental pledge were picked from each year, who were: Eva Pickett, Millie Yates, Alfie Haigh and Harry Hykin.
