‘Back to school’ for some Grace Academy parents

It’s been ‘Back to School’ again for some Grace Academy parents who have joined other members of the community to brush up their functional skills in English and Maths.

The free, government-funded courses run by Solihull College & University Centre, have been hosted by Grace Academy and, for some of the adult learners involved, come hot on the heels of their successful completion of a previous functional skills course.

We caught up with some of the adult learners and this is what they had to say:

“It’s really fun to learn Maths just to improve and do the next level up from last year.  I would really like to progress with my skills in higher education and use my skills to choose a career.  After I have done this, I want to go on to higher education.”

“I’ve got a son in Year 7 and I want to better myself for him so I can help him.  I’ve got a boy in nursery as well and when they come home from school I don’t want to be afraid of their learning, but I want them to look at me and be proud of me.”

“I’m doing an English functional skills course.  I left school with no GCSEs but I would like to better myself for my children and not be stuck on benefits forever. I want my son to say I’m proud of my mum.”
