Need a boost in the morning? Why not try the breakfast club?

Spaghetti and beans, cereal, toast and pancakes are all on the menu for breakfast club students at Grace Academy who get the chance to meet up with friends and have a hearty and healthy start to their day.

Around 30 students enjoy a free breakfast every day from 7.45am until 8.30am, in a fun, sociable atmosphere with music, chat, and the chance to catch up with some teachers who often pop in for toast and coffee.

The club is open to everyone and is particularly helpful for families who need extra support and students who want a positive start to their day.  Eating well in the morning means that for some students, instead of being grumpy, hungry and tired, they are ready to work and enjoy their education.

Maths teacher Miss Henry is committed to helping with breakfast club every day and said:

“I first started being involved in the club because one day one of the students I tutor looked really miserable.  When I asked them why, they said it was because breakfast club hadn’t been open that day and so they were really hungry.  I saw them later in the day and they said someone had made them breakfast and they looked so happy and transformed, and didn’t look hungry, sad or miserable anymore.  Ever since then I have been in breakfast club everyday just to see the same look of happiness on the students’ faces who, after a hearty breakfast, are then ready to make the most of their education.”

Miss Thompson, Assistant Head of Year 7 who also helps out, added:

“The students get to socialise with friends and stimulate their brains at the same time.  It’s so much better than hanging around local shops and buying fizzy drinks in the morning, and having a substantial breakfast available in the morning also has a big impact on reducing late arrivals.  Students used to moan that they were hungry in the morning and starving by break time, but now they are ready to learn.”

Year 8 student Bethany Davies said:

“I like coming because you can have breakfast, listen to music you like, chill out, see friends and make new ones, and have more than one breakfast if you want to.  My favourite is pancakes and spaghetti hoops.”
