Department Intent

 

A broad and balanced curriculum which produces well rounded and informed members of society who can achieve outstanding academic success.

A curriculum that meets the needs of all and improves over time, refined and owned by a reflective and professional staff bod

The PSHE curriculum will provide the knowledge and understanding to ensure a future that is healthy and safe. It will encourage participative and active citizens, prepared for life and work.

 The curriculum will equip students

  • With the understanding of how to keep themselves healthy.
  • With the knowledge needed to develop positive and safe relationships, including sex.
  • The skills needed to make choices based on well informed personal morality, understanding that the decisions they make will affect them and others.
  • To be inspired to have curiosity and explore personal dreams and goals, including future education and career opportunities.
  • With the opportunity to understand their own identity, how they interact with the world and respect for cultural differences seen between individuals.

Topics Include:

 

  • Puberty Workshops
  • Transition to secondary school and personal safety in and outside school, including first aid.
  • Careers, teamwork and enterprise skills, and raising aspirations

Christopher Winter Drugs and Alcohol lessons delivered in Science.

Legal and illegal drugs, cannabis and volatile substance abuse   

Changes in Puberty, managing feelings, and getting help and support

 

TERM 2

Topics Include:

 

  • Diversity, prejudice and bullying
  • Healthy routines, influences on health, puberty, unwanted contact, FGM

 

TERM 3

 

Unit(s) Title: Relationships and Living in the Wider World

 

Topics Include:

 

  • Self-worth, romance and friendships (including online) and relationship boundaries.
  • Saving, borrowing, budgeting, and making financial choices
YEAR 8

TERM 1

 

Unit(s) Title: Health and Wellbeing and Living in the Wider World

 

Topics Include:

 

  • alcohol and drug misuse and pressure relating to drug use.
  • Equality of opportunity in careers and life choices, and different types and patterns of work

TERM 2

Unit(s) Title: Relationships and Health and Wellbeing

 

Topics Include:

 

  • Discrimination in all its forms, including racism, religious discrimination, disability, discrimination, sexism, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing, including body image and coping strategies.

  • Gender identity, sexual orientation, consent, ‘sexting’, and an introduction to contraception
  • Online safety, digital literacy, media reliability, and gambling hooks

Topics Include:

 

  • Healthy and unhealthy friendships, assertiveness, substance misuse, and gang exploitation.
  • Learning strengths, career options and goal setting as part of GCSE options process.

  • The impact of financial decisions, debt, gambling and the impact of advertising on financial choices

  • Relationships and sex expectations, pleasure and challenges, including the impact of the media and pornography
  • Democracy, UK Government, Voting, Law and order, Being a game changer

  • Communities, belonging and challenging extremism
  • Preparation for and evaluation of work experience and readiness for work

Values Workshop – Coping with exam pressures

 

TERM 3

Unit(s) Title: Exam Preparation

Students review all of the GCSE topics and practice their exam technique.
