Students will be required to work in one or more of the following processes:
- Film-based photography
- Digital photography
Students will be required to work in one or more of the disciplines to communicate ideas. By working across disciplines, students will extend their understanding of the scope of photography; by focusing on one discipline, they will gain a deeper the understanding of specific processes within photography.
About the course
2 Year A Level Course
The Photography A-Level gives you the freedom to develop your style and talent whilst learning new techniques and approaches.
Course Suitable For
Students who want to explore a wide range of ideas and develop skills in studio, documentary and landscape/architecture photography. Students will learn about contemporary photographers and develop relevant industry skills in both the use of software packages and traditional darkroom techniques.
Preferable Entry Requirements
GCSE Grade C Art and English.
Students will develop practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of:
- Relevant materials, processes, technologies and resources.
- How ideas, feelings and meanings can be conveyed and interpreted in images and artefacts.
- How images and artefacts relate to the time and place in which they were made and to their social and cultural contexts.
- Continuity and change in different genres, styles and traditions.
- A working vocabulary and specialist terminology.
A Photography A Level can help forge careers in animation, studio portraiture, product photography, fashion photography, photojournalism, film industry, forensic science, curating and stock image photography.

A Level Component 1 – Personal Investigation: supporting studies, practical work, and a personal study. 60% of qualification
A Level Component 2 – Externally Set Assignment: preparatory studies and the 15–hour period of sustained focus. 40% of qualification.
Students are assessed on four different assessment objectives, each worth a quarter of the final grade. Both components are assessed by the teacher and externally moderated.
