Solihull comes alive with The Sound of Music
The Borough of Solihull came alive with The Sound of Music after local students performed their sell out show to 1000 people in two matinees, three evening shows, and a tour of local primary schools.
The youngest ever cast of 11 to 18 year olds from Grace Academy sang chart-topping classics from the Rodgers and Hammerstein show including ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘Edelweiss’, ‘Maria’, ‘The Lonely Goatherd’ and ‘My Favourite Things’, in a performance worthy of a professional stage.
Year 12 student Gabriella Burns, who was cast in the starring role of Maria, said:
“It was an amazing experience that has really pushed me into wanting to further explore theatrics. The staff and cast were so good to work with, I just want to do it all again.”
A glowing mountain backdrop with imperial eagle banners set the scene for the production which involved 400 hours of rehearsals, and Mrs Poppitt, mother of Year 13 Daniel Poppitt who played Captain von Trapp, commented:
“It was such a professional performance and a great representation of the story with quality actors.”
Drama Teacher Peter Willett said of the students involved in the show:
“This is genuinely the best cast I’ve ever worked with. The show has given students a memory they will never forget, and it was great to see them receive standing ovations at the end. As they were our youngest ever performers, we were a bit nervous about whether they could carry it off, but the future is bright because they are all worthy of being main actors in future productions.”
