Students In 6-Hour Cycle Marathon For World Cancer Day

Determined Solihull students have raised over £1,000 for Cancer Research UK in a week of fundraising activities in the run up to World Cancer Day.

Twenty students from Grace Academy raised £400 by taking part in a continuous six-hour sponsored bike ride during the week, while others raised more funds by selling cakes, unity bands and superhero key rings they made themselves.

Summer-Marie Yates, a Year 8 student who took part in the six-hour cycling marathon, said:

“I raised £72 just with the cycle ride and I really enjoyed doing it.  My mum had a skin cancer test last year and I’d like to help more people by raising money to help save lives. I’m doing a sponsored run tomorrow to raise more money.”

Paula Young, spokesperson for Cancer Research UK in Birmingham, said:

“It’s great to see the children coming together to make a difference for World Cancer Day and we’d like to thank them for their sterling efforts.

“World Cancer Day is the perfect opportunity for people to show that together, we can be a powerful force to help beat cancer sooner.

“Survival has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress – but every step our doctors, nurses and scientists take relies on donations from the public and the tireless fundraising of our supporters.”

Cancer Research UK has been calling on men, women and children to play their part by wearing a Unity Band or donating money raised to help fund life-saving research and bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Commenting on the students’ efforts Youth and Community Coordinator Laura Wadley, from Grace Academy Solihull, said:

“We have been encouraging our students to unite with the rest of the nation to help combat this terrible disease.  Student leaders have been running the fundraising week, leading the way in showing the rest of the students how they can make a difference to the lives of others through hard work and determination.

“Students have also been invited to make a donation and receive a paper ribbon in support of World Cancer Day where they can write a message in honour of a family member or friend who may have been affected by cancer. These have been displayed on a memory wall in the foyer.”
